NEW ORLEANS: Two years after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans is still nowhere back to normal—and perhaps will never be. No matter, Sigma Lambda Lambda, the Shelby County, TN graduate chapter, is dedicated to helping the city.

On April 27-28, 2007, SLL and the undergraduate members of Xi Zeta, the University of Memphis chapter, descended upon New Orleans to lend a helping hand. The brothers worked closely with the local Habitat for Humanity organization. The Chapter’s commitment is inspired by its KF, Gregory Blanchard, a native New Orleanian whose family still resides there.

When fleeing the 2005 storm, some 26 of his family members resided with him for nearly two weeks; SLL donated items in relief. “Our family was shown a lot of love following Katrina.  Fraternity brothers, co-workers, and neighbors provided food, clothing and shoulders to cry on at a time when all of that was desperately needed,” said Bro. Blanchard.

“I would be terribly remiss if I did not attempt to do something—no matter how insignificant it may seem to others—to aid my people in New Orleans. Every person counts, your donations are nice and certainly appreciated, but your time is even more valuable.”

Bro. Blanchard vowed to do more and the Chapter, being men committed to service, lent its full support.

“After enjoying 19 years in the fraternity, and experiencing the ups and downs of fraternal life, I was thrilled to see my Brothers live their creed and exemplify our beloved Psalm 133,” Blanchard said. “The fact that SLL wanted to do this service project in New Orleans is a testament to the type of MEN that they are.”

In appreciation the New Orleans brothers hosted a huge barbecue on the Lakefront. Bro. Blanchard’s undergraduate chapter, Alpha Lambda, spearheaded the event.  In addition, Bro. Blanchard’s mother, aunt and uncle provided specially made Purple and Gold King Cakes for the brothers of SLL as a small token of their appreciation.

“Sigma Lambda Lambda intends to make this an annual event. In fact, we are already planning next years’ trip.  We intend to include Epsilon Phi as well as the other undergraduate chapters in the Greater Memphis area to join us,” said Blanchard.

“I’d personally like to see us charter a few busses and turn the Habitat site into a sea of Royal Purple and Old Gold.  I am hopeful that in doing so, we will shine a spotlight on New Orleans, address some of her needs, and at the same time, show our Brothers in the Ninth District that the Brothers of the Fifth District care about their well being.”
